Foundation: Economics

So what can we learn from our textbook chapters, Once Upon a Dime, Bob’s Jeans case study, the Ad & the Ego, or the stock market (ticker) that relates to our foundations? What is/are the value equation (utilities) that makes your Capstone company work? What does it supply? What creates demand? What are the competitive forces in the marketing place? How does your company “win” against its competition? Are there examples of social responsibility demonstrated by this company?

Be sure to incorporate these thoughts into your Capstone presentation. Reply with any questions you might have the would benefit the learning of others in the class.

Ten Graduate Credits this summer – Whew!

I’ve learned a ton about technology options for the classroom during my summer classes through UW-Stout and Facilitating the Future. Blogging, Wiki’s, WordPress, Google.doc, Wetpaint, Diigo, online surveys/quizzing tools, facilitating forums – all methods & assessment tools find a way into Bloom’s taxonomy. Online learning is much bigger for our future than I’d imagined. I’m SO glad that this summer provided an opportunity to dig into it. Now… I hope my students are ready – LOL

So far I’m glad I chose wetpaint for the final project simply because I’m using google sites for my e-portfolio and wordpress for my blog. It has been helpful to use all three applications simultaneously to understand the benefits and limits of each.

July 29 – Progress, Yes!

Ok, so I’m transferring content for my project into my Wiki at http://henesylearning.wetpaint.com/account/GwenHennessey (click to see an ‘in progress’ version) and although it’s frustrating to lose the formatting in the process just to reformat, it seems to be taking shape. I can see the end of the tunnel. The wiki at wetpaint places attachments at the bottom of the page and rejects graphics for the most part… maybe I should’ve used the tool suggested by Harriet in visual wiki, oh well

The murkiest part looking forward will be the citations page – there’s so many when we’re using various tools from the web. How can you cite all of them?

Anyway, I’m enjoying the process knowing that it’s going to be drafted in its entirety soon. I’m looking forward to collaboration on the finals.

July 28 – Progress ?

Wow. Lots of time spent tonight on meeting the requirement to post my concept map on this blog. I tried several different media, including Webspiration and Inspiration before using Powerpoint. I just am unable to find a means to upload the others. So, under my clustermap post from July 1 the power point revealing a concept map for the Economics unit of my Marketing course is now linked. Whew.

I’m not sure I used this time wisely. So much more to get done in terms of our final project. Hmmmm… we’ll see. ~

Week 7 – Finalize Objectives

These are my objectives in final draft - pending feedback on the discussion board. I’ll move ahead with these to get the project moving forward – still lots to do. I’m happy to say that the assessment tools I create through the course will actually be put into use this fall – I’ll have the students in my classroom, but even so, I think the e-learning tools will serve our learning well.

Objective 1: Given new vocabulary in Economics, students will recognize and associate new terms as they relate them to new concepts by linking the appropriate new term to the corresponding concept given a matching tool (online test using Survey Monkey Google Docs)

Objective 2: Given a basic overview of Economics concepts using new vocabulary and time to practice using this terminology in context using an online activity, students will incorporate new language within their written and oral assignments and complete at least two rounds of the assigned online activity to demonstrate proficiency in using new vocabulary in their written reflection (using a Muddiest Point format)

Objective 3: Given new Microsoft Office Version 10.0, students will transfer skills previously mastered and apply learning of upgraded software by practicing use of new features using practice sets or activities and sharing Ah-Ha technology learning with classmates (wiki discussion)

Objective 4: Given a basic understanding of Economics and improved understanding of technology changes (objective 1-2) and their affect on productivity (objective 3), students will summarize their new perspectives through reflection (written response – this will have specific learning prompts)

Carolyn (Carrie) thanks for your suggestion. I set up the profile and – as I move into this further tomorrow - I think I’ll still have time to switch gears if it becomes unreliable. So far it seems to be full of sponsor ads – some of which are less than professional, but for our purposes, I think it is pretty user-friendly. Had only one moment when the page wouldn’t load.

Module 7 = pick a technology tool for the final project

It’s been a good experience to review my cohort blogs this week and see that many are feeling the same pressure to make a selection, the right selection, for our final project; Wikis, Blogs, Google, new video page technology. I don’t have the courage to try something untested at this point – simply because I struggle too much the way it is with technology that is not intuitive or predictable.

I think when the pressure is on to succeed on a “capstone” style project like this, the reward is great. We’ll all feel very relieved when this project is completed and turned in, but we’ll also get “that feeling” – the one that tells you, “you learned something!”

Week 6 – July 20 CyberCoaching

Great readings tonight. I’m preparing questions to develop a “pre-survey” for incoming e-students. I plan to use Google.docs for this purpose. I like the summary format provided by this free service - returned as a spreadsheet.

Lots to do going into Week 7 and digging into the final project. It’s going to come together – no doubt.

I’m again very appreciative of the hands-on learning provided through UW-Stout. The many courses I’ve taken never miss this mark: to meet the student where the student is at and bring them ahead to the objectives set forth. Great job!
